The Getty Villa is a breathtaking attraction that celebrates art and architecture both inside its walls and out.

A view of The Getty Villa's gardens

Whether you're visiting Los Angeles or exploring as a local, be sure to visit The Getty Center's oceanfront companion, nestled in the lovely coastal community of Pacific Palisades. Back in 1954, J. Paul Getty had opened a gallery adjacent to his home and when he ran out of space, he decided to build a second museum down the hill from his original gallery.

The Italianate villa showcases nearly 50,000 antiquities, and some of these vases, coins or pieces of jewelry date back to 6,500 B.C. The building itself is a splendid work of art, designed by architects Robert E. Langdon, Jr. and Ernest C. Wilson, Jr. It is inspired by the first century Villa dei Papiri near Mount Vesuvius, and the views from some of the terraces are simply jaw-dropping.

The Villa takes in hundreds of visitors a day, many coming simply to take in the vast, colorful gardens, which are so beautiful in and of themselves they beckon to be painted and hung up inside the Villa's walls. To top off your visit, enjoy a meal at the Café at the Getty Villa which serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

Openings: Wed.–Mon. 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Closed Tuesdays.
Closing Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Holiday closures: Thanksgiving, December 25 (Christmas Day), and January 1
