Balboa Park

Balboa Park traces its roots back to 1835 — a full 13 years before California became American territory — when Mexican authorities declared the area public land.

Today, the park proudly displays its Mexican-American heritage, showcasing ornate Spanish-style architecture, museums and cultural centers. Maze-like botanical gardens include both native California flora and exotic plants from around the world.

Highlights of the expansive park include the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Museum of Art and the Old Globe Theatre — a 1930s-era replica of Shakespeare's famous London playhouse that remains a center for the arts. Be sure to set aside at least half a day to explore this vast urban oasis in the center of the city.
