Old Town San Diego

Touted as the "Birthplace of California," Old Town San Diego is the site of the first European settlement in the state, dating back to 1769.

The now-bustling city began with a small presidio and a mission — Father Junípero Serra's first. Today, you can still visit Mission San Diego de Alcalá, which holds daily mass and is open to self-guided tours for a small fee. History buffs will enjoy the Serra Museum, which details the city's origins.

Another option is to simply soak in the history firsthand as you walk among the adobe buildings, Victorian houses and colorful shops selling Mexican folk art and Native American jewelry. Be sure to end your day in Old Town with margaritas, guacamole and maybe even some live mariachi music at one of the area's many traditional Mexican restaurants.
