Known for its rugged coastline and scenic sandstone cliffs, this narrow peninsula is the site of the first European expedition in present-day California.

Point Loma has played an important role in California's seafaring and military history

Discovered by Portuguese navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, Point Loma has played an important role in California's seafaring and military history. Guests can immerse themselves in the peninsula's past at the iconic Old Point Loma Lighthouse and Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery — a serenely beautiful destination overlooking the ocean.

While the beaches in Point Loma are mostly rocky and difficult to access, the area is a popular place to watch the sunset, explore tidepools or catch a wave. Use caution, though: While the peninsula is famous for its stellar surf breaks, strong currents and hazardous conditions make them best suited for experienced surfers.
