The Dracaena circle at Lotusland

Lotusland was the creation of Madame Ganna Walska, a beloved opera singer and socialite during the early 20th century. On a visit to California in 1941, Walska purchased the 37-acre property formerly named Cuesta Linda. She and her husband at the time, Theos Bernard, initially sought to make it into a sanctuary for monks called Tibetland. The idea didn't go as planned as no monks came to the estate, and when she divorced Bernard some time later she renamed the grounds Lotusland in commemoration of a lotus growing in one of the ponds.

Through the years until her passing in 1984, Madame Ganna devoted herself completely to the cultivation of the gardens, inciting the expertise of landscape architects and designers, including Lockwood de Forest and Charles Glass. Today, Lotusland is made up of a variety of gardens such as the succulent garden, theatre garden and Japanese garden featuring exotic, vibrant types of flora that come from all around the world.

Please note that due to the location of the garden in a residential area, reservations must be made in advance for a tour, which are given twice a day Wednesday through Saturday. The address is also not disclosed until you have booked a tour; you will then be mailed the location. The property is opened seasonally from February to November.
