Surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains, and nestled amongst the peaceful seclusion of pines and fir trees, the emerald fairways of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course sit along Lake Tahoe’s crystal blue waters. The scenery alone makes it easy to see how it can be considered one of the top golfing destinations.
For more than 40 years, Edgewood Tahoe has provided a golfing sanctuary for celebrities and visitors alike. This simple and elegant 18-hole par 72 is the unique creation of former PGA professional George Fazio and top course designer Tom Fazio. For more than two decades, the course has played host to the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship — a made-for-TV celebrity golf event benefiting charities such as the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and featuring celebrities, including Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Don Cheadle.
While the course is in Nevada, the 9th hole is actually in California. The best part about the course, though, is the end — saving the best for last. Hole 16 is a par 5 that drives straight toward Lake Tahoe with a green surrounded by a circle of sand traps, leading to Hole 17 where you can test your short game on a picturesque par 3 along the beach. The 18th hole, a 591-yard par 5 with a water feature on one side and the shoreline on the other, is considered one of the Top 500 Holes in the World by Golf Magazine.
Only a few steps away from the 18th hole is the property’s sports bar — Brooks' Bar & Deck. The bar serves as a neighborhood-style watering hole where golfers and spectators mingle, while imbibing quality local beers and cocktails. But the real epicurean treat is found at the Edgewood Restaurant, with breathtaking views and two graduated levels of seating to offer an unimpeded view of Lake Tahoe. While the view delights, the menu is equally satisfying, offering the best local produce and seafood in a blend of high-end dining with an appreciation for simplicity.
Although the course is only open from early May to October, the restaurants are open year-round.
Whether you're teeing off or reminiscing back at home about the course's spectacular vistas, there's an iPhone application complete with a webcam feature, so you can follow the course as you play or even recall that sunset over the water. So, as you drive away, the lake view never has to vanish.
