National Ornamental Metal Museum

With terrific views of the river, this is the nation's only museum dedicated to fine metalwork.

The Metal Museum on 3.2 acres overlooking the Mississippi River

The collection includes 3,000 designs from the post-Craft Revival period beginning from the 1970s to now. The one-of-a-kind pieces include sculptures, jewelry and hollowware created by metalsmiths/artists as well as historic objects that date back to the Renaissance. In addition to metal objects, the collection includes drawings, photographs and slides that document the creative process of metalwork and history of the field.

Guided tours are available for groups of 10 or more and require two weeks advance notice. The total length of a tour is 45 minutes without a metalworking demonstration, 1.5 hours with one metalworking demonstration and approximately 2 hours with additional demonstrations and/or hands-on activities. Demonstrations include forging, casting and bladesmithing where two artists create a sword or dagger form using traditional blacksmithing methods. The hands-on activities include art tiles where each participants gets to design their own mold for molten metal, copper bracelets and copper tiles.
