The new PUBLIC brand is Ian Schrager's attempt to create a stylish hotel for the everyman, but let's face it — Schrager will always be the king of cutting edge, and he designed PUBLIC Chicago within the legendary former Ambassador East. It's inevitable that this hotel is hip and exclusive. Not that we mind. The property is gorgeous, with a neutral color scheme, hand-selected furnishings and a curated photography collection. Best of all, Schrager knows when to leave well enough alone. The classic Pump Room remains, upgraded with a farm-to-table menu by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. After hours, guests can linger in the restaurant bar, which takes on the vibe of an old-school supper club, or check out a video installation or live performance in the screening room.
