While other touted Strip properties couldn’t make it to the finish line (think Fontainebleau Las Vegas, Echelon), CityCenter rolled out its red carpet as promised in late 2009 (The Harmon and Veer Towers excepted).
Well-rehearsed staff populates every corner — don’t even try to maneuver this sprawling urban campus without letting them direct you to the closest tram station or one of the many restaurants.
That tram, by the way, is quite efficient, and shuttles passengers like clockwork between sister MGM MIRAGE properties Bellagio and Monte Carlo Resort & Casino, with a stop at CityCenter’s Crystals in between. So if the restaurant Michael Mina Bellagio is booked, you can zip right over to the chef’s American Fish at ARIA Resort & Casino.

Line Renaud, one of the most revered and talented French actresses, is undoubtedly France’s favorite lady. Line has accomplished so much in her career that it would be impossible to list all of her appearances, but her role last year as an authoritarian mother in the comedy ‘Bienvenue Chez les Ch’tis‘ made her even more loveable to all. At 81, she’s still going strong. Last week, she was in Los Angeles, before touring throughout France for the play, “Très Chère Mathilde,” Michèle Fitoussi’s French adaptation of the work of American playwright Israel Horovitz. Despite her busy schedule, she still found the time to spend hours at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills at the bed of French crooner Johnny Hallyday talking sweetly to him while he was in a coma.

If you read my pick for this week’s Los Angeles Restaurant Review of the Week, Oliverio, you’ll see that I strongly recommend dining by the pool as opposed to inside the dining room. I must admit that while I don’t regret choosing that particular restaurant, I wish I had promoted it during a drier week.
All of this week’s wet weather in Southern California just adds to the traffic, the risk of floods, and the general stress. Savoring chef Mirko Paderno’s Italian cuisine poolside is a great way to relax and enjoy life. But if you want to follow my advice and dine al fresco at the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills, I recommend waiting for better weather!

Krug is it, Monsieur le President!
by Alain Gayot
Since it’s no longer politically correct to take the Gulfstream Jet around, we suggest you trade it in for a couple of cases of Krug Clos d’Ambonnay. It seems the two have about the same value these days. Yes, at $2,250 a bottle, this ultra Champagne is très cool, très, très bon and très, très, très cher… but no one has to know it costs that much, right?
Set up a listing on eBay and get rid of the kerosene-guzzling airplane and do the environment some good; Sarah Palin did it. The big difference is that you’d be hard-pressed to sell the carbon-footprint-handicapped flying machine in these economic times; while filling your Riedel flute with a few drops of the golden beverage is nearly impossible.
