One thing I will never have in common with Owen Wilson is an Oscar nomination, as I have no intention to become an actress. But this year to celebrate our birthdays (which are one day apart), we both had the same cake: Bazaar Dessert Graffiti. He shared his with actor Woody Harrelson at The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills; I shared mine with the creators — chef José Andrés himself and executive pastry chef Kriss Harvey.

The title of Roger Vadim’s 1956 film, “…And God Created Woman” starring Brigitte Bardot, comes to mind as we propose that José Andrés created — or at least recreated — desserts at The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills.


I had dinner there a few weeks ago. At the end I was forced by general manager Shannon Ferguson to try the new desserts — I say “forced” because chef de cuisine Joshua Whigham had already sent enough dishes to satisfy my appetite.

A third blog posting about the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills in one month? That may sound excessive, but there is much to report about Sam Nazarian’s first luxury hotel—we’ve hardly even mentioned the food!

Here’s a sneak peek at chef José Andrés’ cuisine at The Bazaar. Some of his dishes, like his foie gras wrapped in cotton candy, are as extravagant as Philippe Starck’s design. But by the end of the night, you’ll have had, for sure, quite a different dining experience!

This morning at 11:45 a.m., chef Ken Frank of La Toque was in a meeting when he received a phone call from Michael Tenenbaum.
Frank: “I am in a meeting, I cannot talk to you.
Tenenbaum: “Shut up, Ken. We won!

 

This was the second phone call Tenenbaum placed to announce the news: the sale of foie gras is now legal in California.

Truffle lovers are happy: The season has started! It means special dinners around what Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin called “the diamonds of the kitchen.” Über-chef José Andrés even started a Truffle Season Dinner Series at SAAM, the chef’s private tasting room in The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills. It is now in its third year.

This is not the first time that the endless creativity of chef José Andrés compelled me to my computer to write a piece after sitting at the table of one of his restaurants.


This time, it is about the second annual Truffle Season Dinner Series at SAAM, the chef’s private tasting room in The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills. This series presents a great challenge as the key ingredient is what Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin called “the diamonds of the kitchen“. Using truffles reduces dramatically Andrés’ range of action and forces him to express himself in one direction.

An Italian Affair in West Hollywood

The latest accomplishment of Sam Nazarian’s sbe group is Mercato di Vetro restaurant in West Hollywood. The challenge Nazarian faces every time he opens a new place is to actually come up with a “new” place and not duplicate one of the successes he already has. Remember, sbe is at the helm of Katsuya (4 locations), The Bazaar by José Andrés, Cleo, The Abbey, Gladstone’s and Papaya King.


One of the reasons he has managed to continue his winning ways is because of the talented team Nazarian has assembled. It seems that all of them work really hard, so guests can have a great experience, leave happy and want to return. Watch our exclusive interview with one team member, sbe’s executive chef Danny Elmaleh, who created the menu at Mercato.
