Enjoy Farmers Market-Inspired Fare on a Primo Patio

With the weather starting to warm up in Southern California, we’re looking forward to leisurely weekend brunches outdoors. Wilshire Restaurant scores highly in the patio department with its split-level al fresco space shaded by trees and sail-like canvases, and this Santa Monica spot has added to its appeal by launching a Sunday brunch buffet complete with bottomless Mimosas and Bloody Marys.

Executive chef Nyesha Arrington, who was a fierce competitor on season 9 of “Top Chef,” takes inspiration from the nearby farmers market to put a spin on classic brunch dishes, such as her crab cake Benedict with tomato hollandaise sauce. The bountiful spread also features fresh fruits, cheeses, charcuterie, shrimp, smoked salmon, brioche french toast and salads like arugula with burrata, roasted red pepper and aged balsamic. In addition, there’s a customizable omelet station and a dessert buffet with mini cupcakes and over-sized cookies.

Local legend Norman Van Aken has resurfaced on the South Florida dining scene with Norman’s 180 in Coral Gables. As the name implies, both cuisine and ambience are a 180-degree departure (well, maybe more like 125 degrees) from his original namesake restaurant, Norman’s — less upscale and complex; more casual, local ingredient-oriented, boldly flavored, and affordable. Dishes on the globetrotting menu range from Colombian arepas to Vietnamese pho to fried chicken and collard greens.

Texas native and “Top Chef” Season 3 contestant Casey Thompson is back on her home turf with her first signature restaurant, Brownstone, in Fort Worth. She’s crafted a menu of modern (but still stick-to-your-ribs) Southern-inspired fare like mini chicken pot pies, barbecue pork rib-lets with house-made sauce and sweet relish, and a bone-in buffalo skillet rib-eye with potato dumplings and cumin-butter.

Boston restaurateurs—and best buds throughout their culinary careers—Lydia Shire (Scampo, Locke-Ober) and Jasper White (Jasper White’s Summer Shack) are teaming up to open Towne Stove and Spirits in the Back Bay on July 30. Globally inspired dishes will include Peking chicken & pot pie and tandoori meats, while a special lobster menu will feature a dozen preparations of that New England seafood staple. And with three dining rooms, three bars and an expansive outdoor patio, there should be plenty of room for all the curious Beantown foodies looking to get their fill at this newcomer.

Feelin’ Lucky?

Lucky Devils in Hollywood
Lucky Devils in Hollywood

by Becky Sauer

The first heat wave of the season has finally hit Los Angeles, and Lucky Devils in Hollywood is turning up the temp itself with a hot new summer menu. Owner Lucky Vanous, whose steamy 1994 soft drink commercial still makes us want to take a Diet Coke break, has added new dishes—like smoked cheddar dip, rosemary-garlic fries, and spicy pulled smoked chicken sandwich—that fit right in with fiery favorites like the jalapeño hummus and hot sauce-kissed Kobe Diablo burger.

Once you’re all fired up, cool down with a scoop of grilled peach frozen custard on top of a Belgium Liège waffle with salted Chimay beer caramel sauce. New summer beers on tap, like the Blanche de Bruxelles and Pasadena’s own Craftsman 1903 Pale Lager, offer still more options to beat the heat.
