This version of the signature Korean dish bibimbap was made with corn flakes

PSY recently put South Korea on the charts with his worldwide pop hit “Gangnam Style.” Now he’s trying to put South Korean food on the map as well.

PSY is working with bibigo, an international chain of casual and fast-casual restaurants that feature traditional Korean dishes with a modern twist. We had the pleasure of attending a luncheon at the Korean Cultural Center in LA sponsored by bibigo and Bibimbap Backpackers, people who have traveled through five continents spreading their love for Korean food.

Bibimbap, which means “mixed rice,” is served often as a bowl of warm white rice topped with sauteéd and seasoned vegetables and hot pepper paste. We tried three different varieties, including one topped with kimchi and pork belly. We were invited to make our own and choose from toppings including egg, seaweed, mushrooms, carrots, bulgogi (grilled sliced beef) and even corn flakes! We also learned a few Korean phrases including “Thank you” and “Have a nice meal!”

GAYOT.com features reviews of bibigo and top Korean restaurants like YongSuSan in L.A.’s Koreatown. Check out the selections for the Top 10 Korean Barbecue Restaurants in LA and NY, and our food terms pages will help you learn how to decipher restaurant menus from Korean to Italian. Bon appétit, or as they say in Seoul, “jal meokkesseumnida!”
