Holiday tea service at Top of the Mark

by Anneli Rufus

What could possibly be more inviting on a chilly day in the big city than a pot of hot tea flanking a multi-tiered tray fully stocked with French pastries and finger sandwiches, perfectly appointed with such dainty details as herb sprigs, raspberry halves and striped chocolate curls? The answer to that one is easy: all of the above, plus scones, Champagne and one of the most spectacular vistas anywhere in the known world.

Keeping up a nearly century-long tradition beloved by many generations of San Franciscans, the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins hotel has just announced a series of lavish holiday celebrations at its world-famous rooftop restaurant and bar, Top of the Mark
.

“This is what it’s like every day in Bombay,” an Indian man said to a wide-eyed red-headed woman in her thirties who looked perplexed and intimidated by the crush of people.

We weren’t in Mumbai, as the Indian metropolis formerly known as Bombay is now officially called. We were in Times Square in the heart of Manhattan. The Disney-fied space was taken over by Indians and Indian-Americans on September 22 to celebrate Diwali, a popular holiday in India known as the “festival of lights.” Diwali wasn’t actually celebrated in India until November 3 this year but that didn’t stop several hundred people from coming out on a Sunday afternoon to be entertained and eat good food.

When you think of Morocco, you may conjure up its vast stretches of desert, labyrinthine bazaars, or even the Bogart movie “Casablanca.” But have you ever thought of this Islamic nation as wine country?

Pinot in the City: Oregon’s Willamette Valley to Los Angeles

by Barnaby Hughes

It’s not every day that representatives of 65 Willamette Valley wineries leave Oregon, especially to come to Los Angeles. Besides distance (about 1,000 miles), Oregon wineries face stiff competition from California wineries, which tend to be older and larger and have better brand recognition. At “Pinot in the City,” a tasting event organized by the Willamette Valley Wineries Association, hundreds of Oregon winemakers and proprietors brought a selection of their finest wines to The Ebell of Los Angeles, an historic women’s club.

There were many events during the Third Annual Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival. It was not possible to attend of all them, so choices needed to be made. When I saw that Curtis Stone was hosting Lexus Live on Grand on Saturday, I did not hesitate to trade a quiet evening at home for a giant food and wine party with the Walt Disney Concert Hall as a backdrop.

If you did not attend the Third Annual Los Angeles Food & Wine Opening Party last night, you missed chef Giada De Laurentiis celebrating her birthday with a cake made by the Duff’s Cakemix Duff Goldman.

You also missed fine food from top chefs from LA, San Francisco, and beyond, lots of wines. Since pictures are worth a thousand words, take a look at photos from the gala. I’m hoping to see you over the weekend at the upcoming events.

by Sophie Gayot

Have you ever dined dressed all in white right on the car lanes of Rodeo Drive in the heart of Beverly Hills? Presumably not, unless you were among the 1,500 participants of the first “Dinner in White” that took place last night in L.A.

Started in 1988, 25 years ago, in Paris — I attended one of the first ones back in the day — Diner en Blanc has now gone international. Brush up on your French and listen to an interview with François Pasquier, the co-founder, and his son Aymeric, co-founder of Diner en Blanc International. In my exclusive video they explain the etiquette to follow in order to be a part of this incredible dinner party.

The World Series Cup Women’s Finals in Long Beach, CA

After a nearly ten-year absence, international beach volleyball returned to American shores for the World Series of Beach Volleyball in Long Beach, CA, from July 22-28. Featuring both an International Federation of Volleyball (FIVB) grand slam event and a new “World Series Cup,” which pitted top international competitors against the best of the U.S. , the event drew out volleyball fans in droves to the picturesque Long Beach waterfront, which also hosted live music, street food and interactive booths throughout the week.
