“The filet mignon will go very well with a dry Cabernet or a spicy Belgian saison.” Until recently you would not have heard a sommelier make the latter part of that statement, but times are changing. Proof of the leveled playing field for beer and wine was the “Beer vs. Wine Pairing Smackdown” held on May 21 at miX amidst the stunning views from the 64th floor of THEHotel at Mandalay Bay. The event pitted beer against wine in a five-course pairing dinner, each dish served with a beer and wine selected by the respective teams. Audience participation involved voting for the libation that paired best with each course; and selecting “Team Beer” or “Team Wine” buttons to wear, some choosing to don both out of a fear of commitment.

France’s famous Bordeaux region comprises numerous appellations and sub-regions, from St-Emilion, Pomerol and Médoc to Entre-Deux-Mers and Sauternes. In 2007, the AOC Côtes de Bordeaux was created, combining the “terroirs” of Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon and Francs, in order to distinguish this unique region from its neighbors. The appellation also gives winemakers within the region the flexibility to blend wines from different areas within the appellation.

The first half of May 2014 was a wild one for New York City. May 5 saw the annual James Beard Foundation Awards and all its post-gala debauchery; May 12 was the re-opening party of the revamped Tavern on the Green; and May 9-13 was the annual Manhattan Cocktail Classic. If you happened to attend all three, it’s likely that your liver is begging you to slow down, while your head is hoping to hit the pillow for longer than a few hours at a time.

When it comes to food-centric festivals, the city of Addison certainly has plenty to boast of: There’s Oktoberfest, WorldFest and the perennial favorite Taste Addison. Fans of the latter may be slightly disappointed to hear that the annual event won’t be returning in 2014, but Addison is cooking up something totally new that promises to be a big draw for the Metroplex’s serious foodies. Come May, Fork & Cork will replace Taste of Addison as the city’s largest annual food event.

The 18th annual COL•COA French Film Festival debuted at The Director’s Guild Theater Complex in Los Angeles, where renowned director Claude Lelouch’s 44th film, “We Love You, You Bastard” was presented by Axel Cruau, French Consul General in Los Angeles. Produced by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, COL•COA is the largest French film festival outside of France, bringing together 60 writers and producers and 20,000 attendees.

Once the Champagne de L’Argentaine and food from some of LA’s popular restaurants like Church & State, 9021Pho and Lexington Social House was enjoyed, a throng of VIPs, actors, directors and other moviegoers proceeded into the theater for the feature presentation of “Salaud, on t’aime” AKA stateside “We Love You, You Bastard.” After the credits rolled, “Mad Men” creator/executive producer Matthew Weiner moderated a Q&A session.

Crisp, chilled rosé is commonly considered to be a warm weather drink, but that didn’t stop Provençal rosés from coming to New York City early this year. To be precise, they arrived ten days before spring at Lafayette restaurant in NoHo on an overcast Monday in March. This year’s “Provence in the City” tasting and seminar featured more than 60 different wines. Six were paired with four Provençal-influenced courses from Lafayette.
