Chef Thomas Keller of Per Se and The French Laundry

Every year, S. Pellegrino announces the world’s top 50 restaurants. In this year’s rankings, which were just released, the water producer included six restaurants in the U.S. Not so coincidentally, all half-dozen of them — Eleven Madison Park (#5), Per Se (#11), Alinea (#15), Le Bernardin (#19), Daniel (#29), and The French Laundry (#47) — have also earned a spot on GAYOT’s list of the top 40 Restaurants in the U.S.

For each of these notable restaurants, we offer a profile of their chefs as well as a complete restaurant review. For chef Thomas Keller, who helms two of the six top restaurants above, we have a lengthy profile explaining why he is the Best Restaurateur in the U.S. for 2013 in our Annual Restaurant Issue.

Radio Host Joel Riddell at the Spring Mountain Vineyard with Sophie Gayot

by Sophie Gayot

After discussing the Southern California Winners of GAYOT 2013 Restaurant Issue with chef Jamie Gwen on her radio show, I got to do the same with Joel Riddell for the northern part of the Golden State.

I was lucky to meet the energetic Riddell during the S.Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef competition in Napa Valley where I was a judge. Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Riddell, who is based in San Francisco, discusses his culinary, wine and travel findings on Talk 910 AM KKSF during his show Dining Around.

After we spoke about GAYOT.com and what I like to eat, Riddell got our insights on the Northern California restaurants that won a place in the GAYOT 2013 Restaurant Issue. They include restaurants from chef Thomas Keller, the recipient of the title “Best Restaurateur in the U.S.

Find out which are the best restaurants in America for 2013

We have just published GAYOT’s Annual Restaurant Issue, which includes the highly-anticipated Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S. list. The 2013 edition also names chef Thomas Keller as U.S. Best Restaurateur of the Year.

Of the Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S. selected, nine of them did not appear on last year’s list, and three of those, The Mansion Restaurant at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, Michael Mina and The Willows Inn, are gracing the list for the very first time. Six that made Top 40 lists in earlier years are making a comeback: Bacchanalia, Bouley, CityZen, Corton, Georgian Room and The Restaurant at Meadowood. That means that nine from last year’s list did not make the cut: Cyrus, The Herbfarm, L’Espalier, Masa’s, Michel Richard Citronelle, Patina, Restaurant Eugene, TRU and Twist by Pierre Gagnaire.
