Since 1969, restaurant, hotel, travel & other witty reviews by a handpicked, worldwide team of discerning professionals—and your views, too.

I mostly review restaurants at dinner, sometimes at lunch, but never at breakfast. However, when I was invited to flip pancakes with Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri, I got up (early) and drove to Hollywood this morning.

Last night, as I dined at SUR Restaurant & Lounge, I tried to grill Katie Maloney, one of the cast members of Bravo’s hit TV show Vanderpump Rules. She has been a server at the restaurant for four years and has been in the cast of the show both seasons it has aired. So she certainly knows things about Stassi Schroeder, Jax Taylor, Tom Sandoval and Kristen Doute’s dramas.

Watch my exclusive video interview with her to listen to what she has to say. Then tune in Monday night for the next episode.

Chef Curtis Stone is opening his very first restaurant

Chef Curtis Stone is opening his very first restaurant

by Sophie Gayot

If Aussie Curtis Stone has become famous in the U.S. through the 81 episodes of TLC’s “Take Home Chef” TV show, he is at his roots a REAL chef. His passion and love for food started when he was just four in the kitchen of his grandmother, Maude.

At 18, he becomes a professional chef at the Savoy Hotel in Melbourne. After touring the gastronomic countries that are France, Italy and Spain to perfect his culinary education, he ended up in London with none other than the extravagant Marco Pierre White at three venues: Café Royal; Mirabelle where Curtis was the sous-chef; and Quo Vadis as the head chef. Talk about a learning experience, especially since I know how nice and courteous Curtis is!

François Delahaye, Hôtel Plaza Athénée general manager, chef Alain Ducasse with Sophie Gayot

by Sophie Gayot

Although I missed the 100th-anniversary celebration of Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris in April of this year, I was there last night for its “unofficial” closing ceremony. Yes, you read that correctly, the Plaza’s last day was September 30th. Rest assured, it is closing for a good cause: to reopen with even more grandeur (if that is even possible).

Hollis Wilder is my favorite kind of warrior: the chef is the three-time winner of Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars”. If you indulge in her creations like I have, “cupcake” will take on a whole different meaning. She ingeniously transformed a smoked salmon egg salad into a delicious savory cupcake which helped her win Season 1 in 2009. This year, she won Season 8 with her jalapeño popper. She even makes ratatouille cupcakes!

Watch my video interview with her to get an exclusive preview of her new book Savory Bites: Meals You Can Make in Your Cupcake Pan. The cookbook contains ninety nine recipes that will help you achieve savory happiness.

Actor David Arquette with Sophie Gayot

We can all thank actor David Arquette for welcoming us to his beautiful Beverly Hills house for the 2013 Vintage Hollywood 12th Annual Wine & Food Tasting Event.

Some Los Angeles chefs offered delicious tasting bites like the scallop ceviche by littlefork, an array of grilled cheese sandwiches by chef Eric Greenspan, tuna tartare tacos by soon-to-open Del Frisco’s Grille in Santa Monica, and burgers by probably the best burger chain The Counter. Let’s not forget the oysters by Christophe Happillon‘s The Oyster Gourmet, and the savory finale of cheeses from the celebrated Cheese Store of Beverly Hills.

Those who know me know that I don’t really get intimidated. But last night when the time came to speak on camera with maestro Plácido Domingo, I was. The “King of Opera” had just finished conducting the world premiere of opera Dulce Rosa at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica.
