It is 18 kilos of a 1,200-page cookbook containing 500 recipes and illustrated by 1,500 photos; 1,000 copies of this book are being sold at € 1,500 by a chef who started in the kitchen at 15, and has been cooking for 25 years. From peeling potatoes at his debut, Yannick Alléno worked his way up to fine dining gastronomy when he took the helm at Le Meurice restaurant in Paris.

I think when restaurateur/hotelier Michael Zislis created The Strand House Culinary Masters Series, he had a very good idea. Every time I have attended one of the events, the restaurant has been completely full. I didn’t see a single empty seat; instead I saw lots of people enjoying the cuisine of Josiah Citrin, Michael Cimarusti, Nancy Silverton, Alain Giraud, Douglas Keane or Tory McPhail to name just a few of the participating chefs. To top it off, diners can eat the fine food while watching the sun set over the Manhattan Beach pier and the Pacific.


During one of the dinners, where Trefethen wines were served, I finished the evening talking with chef Rick Tramonto who had flown in from Chicago. In the above video, you can watch as we flip through the pages of his autobiography together. Tramonto is a true success story; TRU restaurant under his direction was named one of GAYOT.com’s Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S. in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007. And Restaurant R’evolution in New Orleans, where he has partnered with chef John Folse, made GAYOT.com’s Top 10 New Restaurants in the U.S. list this year.

Chef Curtis Stone is opening his very first restaurant

If Aussie Curtis Stone has become famous in the U.S. through the 81 episodes of TLC’s “Take Home Chef” TV show, he is at his roots a REAL chef. His passion and love for food started when he was just four in the kitchen of his grandmother, Maude.


At 18, he becomes a professional chef at the Savoy Hotel in Melbourne. After touring the gastronomic countries that are France, Italy and Spain to perfect his culinary education, he ended up in London with none other than the extravagant Marco Pierre White at three venues: Café Royal; Mirabelle where Curtis was the sous-chef; and Quo Vadis as the head chef. Talk about a learning experience, especially since I know how nice and courteous Curtis is!

This is not the first time that the endless creativity of chef José Andrés compelled me to my computer to write a piece after sitting at the table of one of his restaurants.


This time, it is about the second annual Truffle Season Dinner Series at SAAM, the chef’s private tasting room in The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills. This series presents a great challenge as the key ingredient is what Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin called “the diamonds of the kitchen“. Using truffles reduces dramatically Andrés’ range of action and forces him to express himself in one direction.

Since I dine at so many restaurants, I rarely steer friends to places I haven’t been to myself. But having enjoyed Ricardo Zarate‘s cooking at Picca as well as Mo-Chica, I suggested she try his new restaurant Paiche even though I had yet to visit.

The Four Seasons Hotels Food Truck is an idea developed during a corporate meeting that was two years in the making. The truck is currently touring cities in the western United States which are home to Four Seasons Hotels, starting in Palo Alto and ending in Santa Fe.

Although I missed the 100th-anniversary celebration of Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris in April of this year, I was there last night for its “unofficial” closing ceremony. Yes, you read that correctly, the Plaza’s last day was September 30th. Rest assured, it is closing for a good cause: to reopen with even more grandeur (if that is even possible).
