The Queen Elizabeth 2

The Queen Elizabeth 2

Many cruise liners are likened to luxury hotels, but few are as iconic as the Queen Elizabeth 2. Entering serving in 1969, this legendary vessel — known as the QE2 — sailed under the Cunard flag for nearly 40 years, transporting passengers across the Atlantic (and at least 26 times around the world), and even aiding Britain’s war effort in the Falklands. Purchased upon its retirement for $100 million by the Dubai state company Istithmar World, it languished, a victim of the country’s financial crisis. But times have changed and it is now preparing for new life as a 300-room floating hotel.

It’s Easy to Book a Cruise — It’s Hard to Pick the Right One

by Andre Gayot

What’s the right cruise for you or me? Let’s start with the size of the ship: Big? Not so big? Small? Big is beautiful, some say. But small can be also, I think. I have tried it all, including a 25-foot schooner, and they all have their charms. How much you will enjoy your voyage depends on many factors: age, temperament, dependence on comforts, openness to adventure, aptitude to control sea-sickness, etc.

Driving up the coast in a Land Rover

Driving up the coast in a Land Rover

by Jeff Hoyt

I recently wrote about how charge and credit cards bonus points can be used to travel for free. That is certainly true, but the more you know, the more bang you’ll get for your no bucks!

I have accumulated more than 150,000 American Express Membership Rewards points on my own. But American Express offered to give me an additional 250,000 points to book my family summer vacation through them, and I was thrilled by the opportunity.

Virgin Atlantic A330 on the runway

Virgin Atlantic A330 on the runway

It seems that a person can’t go anywhere anymore without overhearing someone else’s cell phone conversation. The one place that seemed safe was the friendly skies. Not so any longer. Virgin Atlantic has announced that it will become the first British airline to allow passengers to use their own mobile phones at 35,000 feet. Using a link-up with Panasonic-owned AeroMobile, passengers will be able to make calls on the airline’s new A330-300 Airbus flights between London and New York, with as many as twenty planes available for this service by the end of 2012.
