Enjoy a wine tour Texan style

If you think Texas is all about big hair and barbecue, you got it all wrong. Texas can be quite sophisticated, and it also boasts a fabulous wine country! In fact, the Texas winemaking tradition is the oldest in the country. You’ll find half of the state’s wineries in the Texan Hill Country, and the charming town of Fredericksburg has become a bona fide destination for fickle foodies and oenophiles.

Our favorite must-visit destination in this German tradition-soaked locale include Becker Vineyards with its 46 acres of French Vinifera vines that grow eight grape varietals; Der Lindenbaum restaurant for German schnitzels and konigsberger klopse; and August E’s Fine Dining — perhaps the most un-Fredericksburg place in Fredericksburg with pan-continental cuisine such as the scallop hand roll, which recreates a burrito with seaweed instead of a tortilla.

A Splash of Color Lands in Palm Springs

The February 1 opening of Saguaro Palm Springs, the second hotel in the collection of Saguaro hotels by Joie de Vivre, brought 249 colorful and vibrant guest rooms and suites to Coachella Valley, at the site of the former Holiday Inn Palm Springs City Center. Described as a bold Southwestern palette, the color scheme was created by renowned architects Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat of New York-based Stamberg and Aferiat Architecture and was inspired by the tones found in desert wildflowers. The view from the Andaz West Hollywood

With the launch of the Andaz Liverpool Street London in 2007, a new Hyatt brand was born. Now, with the announcement that it will rebrand two Avia hotels (one in Napa and one in Savannah) this summer, Andaz is kicking its expansion into high gear. The Night of the Jaguar

by André Gayot

Undoubtedly, we are a car civilization. The automobile is an ordinary object in our spoiled world, a dream in the barren parts of the planet and a nightmare at a quarter to nine a.m. on the 101 freeway in downtown Los Angeles. We find cars a convenient instrument to go to the stores and take back home the stuff of which probably we bought too large a quantity at our local Costco. A car is more practical than a backpack and a bicycle, but more polluting — as we are told by ecology — and more expensive, as we can see by the price soaring at the pump.

OK, it’s our way of life. But some of us are in love with automobiles. They admire the beautiful machines, their engineering, their design and their power, regardless of the speeding tickets and hefty insurance premiums they may have to face.

The beach at Lihue, Kauai

by Jeff Hoyt

We think anytime is a great time to visit Hawaii, but we appreciate The Aloha State the most when winter hits the mainland. Fun in the sun is so much more so when you know your neighbors back home are knee deep in snow.

If you want to put sunscreen on your neck instead of a scarf, we recommend a trip to Kauai. As more and more people discover this once-remote island, developers are making over the pristine landscape. Although we’d like to stop this wave of “progress,” one advantage is that there are more top places to stay, and more top toques to satisfy your appetite. Our Kauai travel guide will tell you where to book reservations for hotels and restaurants while you’re in search of volcanoes.
