With newly appointed hotel executive chef Cyrille Pannier at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, the Sunday feast has become bigger and better, with some ten different stations to choose from. Pannier has also joined forces with Mette Williams, the chef de cuisine of the hotel’s on-site restaurant Culina Modern Italian, to add a few of Williams’ dishes to the already expansive brunch menu.

It seems that chef José Andrés and his culinary team love truffles — and I am glad that they do. Last October, SAAM restaurant, the chef’s tasting room at The Bazaar at SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills, started the second annual Truffle Season Dinner Series with a meal featuring white truffles.


But since black is beautiful, last week the restaurant started offering the black truffle experience. Throughout the 18-course prix-fixe menu, priced at $250 with wine pairings available, diners can discover the culinary creativity and talents of José Andrés, R & D chef Aitor Zabala, chef de cuisine Holly Jivin, and pastry chef Kriss Harvey.

If the New Year celebration based on the Gregorian calendar only lasts for a single day, it is not the case for the Chinese New Year, as it lasts fifteen days.

 

For the Gregorian calendar, celebrations are held on December 31, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day is a holiday. The lunisolar Chinese calendar determines the date of Chinese New Year, so it changes every year. For 2014, it started on January 31st under the sign of the horse, so you have until February 14 to celebrate.

Despite the names of the venues Brian Malarkey operates in the San Diego area — Searsucker and Herringbone, and the now-defunct Burlap, Gingham and Gabardine — he is not in the fabric business but rather in restaurants.


The “Top Chef“, who is also a judge/mentor on ABC-TV’s The Taste, has been doing a good job since his original restaurant, Searsucker, in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, made GAYOT.com’s 2013 Hot 40 Restaurants in the U.S. The day I dropped by in the middle of the week in low-season, the restaurant was packed.

During my dinner last week at Acabàr, located in an iconic, storied building on Sunset Boulevard, I was wowed by the décor. The Meschin brothers — owners of The Little Door and Little Next Door — along with Roland Emmerich, Jerry Murray and Sue Choi did an amazing job restoring the former Moroccan restaurant Dar Maghreb that had been there for 42 years.
