Peter Mondavi Jr. with Alain Gayot
When it comes to legendary wineries in Napa, Charles Krug certainly comes out on top as the Valley’s first. Founded in 1861 by an exiled Prussian radical journalist, it was purchased by the Mondavi family after prohibition and the rest is history.
We caught up with third generation family owner Peter Mondavi Jr. at a fundraiser event for the Make-A-Wish children’s foundation of Greater Los Angeles at Morton’s on La Cienaga. Emcee, Sara Fasolino, Certified Sommelier extraordinaire for the Morton’s chain, doubled as the evening’s auctioneer.
We were charmed by Peter’s elegance and direct communication as he went over each wine. Our favorite of the night was the very bright and lively 1980 Cabernet Sauvignon served en Magnum with an ultra-rich smooth finish. But the piece de resistance was a 27 liter bottle also known as a Paramount, weighing in at 100 pounds, of 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon. The bottle was auctioned off to one lucky bidder for $2,700 [such a deal].
The Charles Krug – Peter Mondavi Family Winery has teamed up with the swanky Chicago Steakhouse chain to raise funds for the Children’s Charity and produce a series of events throughout the year at various locations. It was a fun evening of camaraderie, a great way to meet supportive people, chow down on filet mignon and wash it all down with beautifully crafted wines.
