Eat, Drink and Save Dinero

With Cinco de Mayo falling on a Monday this year, some of the city’s best eating and drinking spots have upped the ante with a three-day weekend full of deals, drinks and Mexican food.

West Hollywood’s Tortilla Republic is hosting their own block party on Sunday, May 4th. The booming affair runs from 2 p.m.-10 p.m. and will feature DJs, a live mariachi band and VIP suites complete with bottle service. Of course, $6 margaritas and crispy chicken flautas will also be available.

Lotería Grill is ushering in Cinco de Mayo with the return of its 5-5-5 menu throughout the day on May 5th. Each Los Angeles location will feature chef/owner Jimmy Shaw’s five “best of” tacos along with the top five house-favorite margaritas and five Mexican beers. The “Chile de Nogada” taco will make its debut: chile poblano filled with cheese and plantains, a creamy walnut sauce, and pomegranate seeds to top it all off.

Both Border Grill locations are holding Cinco de Mayo celebrations this weekend with tequila and food specials. Santa Monica will feature all-day happy hour on Sunday, May 4th, while the downtown location will have a pig roast and Aztec dancers on Saturday, May 3rd, and Sunday, May 4th, plus a DJ and taco station on Monday, May 5th.

Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne’s The Larder at Tavern plans to pair a series of small plates with Mexican-inspired cocktails for $35 per guest on Monday, May 5th, from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Ceviches and carnitas tacos match up with mezcals and tequila drinks in this Cinco de Mayo installment of the bi-monthly Wine and Cheese Club.

Located in the heart of Downtown, Yxta Cocina Mexicana is celebrating Cinco de Mayo all day long with $6 carnitas tacos and tamales, $7 margaritas and $3 Tecates. Open from 2 p.m.-9 p.m., this spot offers authentic hand-crafted tacos, creative cocktails and stylish industrial décor.

From May 3-5, Calle Tacos on Hollywood Boulevard will have a Cinco de Mayo fiesta with a “Mexican Paradise Photobooth” and a number of $5 margaritas to choose from, including strawberry, Jamaica (hibiscus) and jalapeño.

Lucky Strike, the buzzy Hollywood bowling spot, is doing things a bit differently for Cinco de Mayo, focusing on burgers in lieu of tacos and burritos. Their signature one-off hamburger, dubbed Burger de Mayo, features a half-pound patty topped with guacamole and pico de gallo, then wrapped up inside of a Oaxacan cheese quesadilla. Best of all, a portion of each Burger de Mayo sold goes to benefit the Conquer Cancer Coalition, meaning you can party while still doing your part.

Plan Check Kitchen + Bar is offering their Cheeseburger Machismo (habanero cheese, bacon, spicy mayo, batter-fried onions, and Japanese escabeche), taco truck fries and Mexican chocolate donuts on Cinco de Mayo. Revelers planning to imbibe can enjoy $5 El Picante margaritas and mezcal honey sours.
