Based on the popular video game series of the same name, “Need for Speed” was created with the intention of making the ultimate car chase movie. Directed by Scott Waugh, a former stuntman, the film follows the story of Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), an exotic sports car mechanic seeking to avenge the death of his friend the only way he knows how — through a high-stakes street race.
As the movie’s name suggests, the heart of “Need for Speed” lies in its carefully choreographed chase sequences. The racing is impressive, and is made all the more intense through the director’s decision to eschew CGI in favor of live-action stunt work. The principal actors all got to spend time behind the wheel, as well, and performed some of their own stunts after undergoing intensive driving lessons. Proving himself a true student of stunt driving, Waugh includes homages to the great car chases of cinema, including scenes from “American Graffiti,” “Smokey and the Bandit,” “The French Connection” and “The Blues Brothers.”
While Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper make for an entertaining pair of handsome-yet-hardened street racers, the true stars of the film are the cars themselves. Among the featured vehicles are some of the fastest cars ever produced, including the Koenigsegg Agera R, Bugatti Veyron and the prized Lamborghini Sesto Elemento. However, the centerpiece car of “Need for Speed” is a 900-horsepower Ford Shelby Mustang custom-built for the film. As many of the vehicles are worth millions of dollars — and many meet a fiery death racing down PCH — Waugh and crew opted in several instances to make detailed reproductions that could fool even the keenest of automotive fans.
Nonetheless, whether you’re a dedicated gear-head or couldn’t fix a flat to save your life, “Need for Speed” offers the kind of high-octane excitement that any fan of the action genre can enjoy.
