A Gourmet Feast in the Middle of the Street

Long gone are the silver mining days in Park City, Utah. Today, locals, part-time residents and visitors flock to partake in an array of sports and activities, winter and summer. There is Bob’s annual film festival and they once held the Winter Olympics here. For the past six years there has been another reason to position yourself at 7,000 feet of altitude and partake in a culinary journey with 2,500 of your closest friends. All that is required is that for one Saturday night, the city shuts down Main Street, enabling three dozen restaurants to set up a ten-block long table.

Savor the Summit is not a fundraiser but more of a promotion put together by Park City restaurants; nearly all of the participating eateries are located on Main Street. Ginger Ries, Executive Director of the Park City Area Restaurant Association, explains that the annual affair was designed to kick off the summer and highlight the food of the season. Later on in July comes the Park City Food and Wine Classic which is a charity event.

Unlike other culinary events, guests here must pick in advance the restaurant where they want to dine. Prices range widely from $40 to $150 per person, which may or may not include wine or beverage pairings. Prepare for this camaraderie-filled event by bringing warm clothes; as soon as the sun sets, you’ll be glad you did. Bill White’s Chimayo Restaurant had things well-appointed with a lounge, a protected space in what was a luxurious makeshift street dining room, as did his Wahso An Asian Grill. Talisker on Main had a white theme where guests had better wear white. Music bands are set up every few blocks for each “neighborhood’s” entertainment. A Spirit Garden serving an array of Constellation Wines and a wide selection of Wasatch and Squatters Beers and Tito’s Vodka was set up to kick things off.

We had 350 Main Brasserie executive chef Carl Fiessinger’s fancy menu which might not have been in the best environment. Small portion dishes came in slow strides and often cold but our fellow diners kept smiling and sometimes pilfering food from next door to fill up the gaps.

For first timers, this is an amazing sight, and if gastronomically inclined, a must-try. Returning participants find favorite restaurants which they then book for the following year.
