Pinot in the City: Oregon’s Willamette Valley to Los Angeles

It’s not every day that representatives of 65 Willamette Valley wineries leave Oregon, especially to come to Los Angeles. Besides distance (about 1,000 miles), Oregon wineries face stiff competition from California wineries, which tend to be older and larger and have better brand recognition. At “Pinot in the City,” a tasting event organized by the Willamette Valley Wineries Association, hundreds of Oregon winemakers and proprietors brought a selection of their finest wines to The Ebell of Los Angeles, an historic women’s club.

Tasting Notes: “Sideways” the movie was a big boon to Santa Barbara wine country, and perhaps no one benefited from its success more than Gray Hartley and Frank Ostini of The Hitching Post II restaurant and winery. Despite total production having grown to 15,000 cases per year, Hitching Post wines are still not easy to find. The winery’s youngest Pinot Noir offering, the 2010 Hometown is sourced from vineyards in Los Alamos, Santa Maria and the Sta. Rita Hills. It is a fresh and fruity wine featuring dark cherry flavors with a hint of spice. 


Food Pairings: Grilled artichokes, flat iron steak, smoked salmon
