After my very good tapas dinner at José AndrésJaleo restaurant at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas last week, I wanted to try more Spanish small plates. I decided to head to Bar Pintxo, chef Joe Miller’s restaurant in Santa Monica, California.

I had a disappointing meal when I first visited soon after its December of 2007 opening, but hadn’t been since the arrival of chef David Plonowski about a year and half ago. On my return, I just did not want to leave and wanted to try more and more of his dishes. They are small, so it is easy to ask for more.

And Chef Jeff Mahin Re-Invents Pizza

UPDATE 05/13: Stella Rossa Pizza Bar has changed its name to Stella Barra.

When I read the bio of chef Jeff Mahin, I was intrigued. By the age of 27, he had trained at The Fat Duck in England, Nobu in New York and Arzak in Spain. Mahin is now making pizzas in Santa Monica, Calif., for the reputable restaurant group Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises (among 41 dining concepts, they own Everest, a 2011 GAYOT.com Top 40 US Restaurant, and L2O, a 2010 GAYOT.com Top 40 US Restaurant). He is also a partner in the company. I decided to head to Stella Rossa Pizza Bar and see what these pizzas were all about.

French Tapas, Crêpes & Bastille Day

Chef Jean-François Meteigner is attached to his French roots, which is great for diners, as La Cachette Bistro is one of the few remaining true French restaurants in the Los Angeles metro area.

He has been jazzing up his menu with a line of French tapas for a while now. They are playful, and create fun interactions at the dining room table as tapas do. Watch my exclusive video with Meteigner who explains his tapas, and enjoy pictures of the dishes below.

Line Renaud, one of the most revered and talented French actresses, is undoubtedly France’s favorite lady. Line has accomplished so much in her career that it would be impossible to list all of her appearances, but her role last year as an authoritarian mother in the comedy ‘Bienvenue Chez les Ch’tis‘ made her even more loveable to all. At 81, she’s still going strong. Last week, she was in Los Angeles, before touring throughout France for the play, “Très Chère Mathilde,” Michèle Fitoussi’s French adaptation of the work of American playwright Israel Horovitz. Despite her busy schedule, she still found the time to spend hours at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills at the bed of French crooner Johnny Hallyday talking sweetly to him while he was in a coma.

Before I sit down at my computer to write the full review of La Cachette Bistro, I want to share with you, right away, my dinner there last night in our blog section—view it in the pictures below.

After many years of offering fine dining at La Cachette in Century City, chef Jean-François Meteigner is now doing “bistro” cuisine in Santa Monica.

Both the food and décor, whether enjoyed inside or on the patio, will surely attract diners.
