Despite the names of the venues Brian Malarkey operates in the San Diego area — Searsucker and Herringbone, and the now-defunct Burlap, Gingham and Gabardine — he is not in the fabric business but rather in restaurants.


The “Top Chef“, who is also a judge/mentor on ABC-TV’s The Taste, has been doing a good job since his original restaurant, Searsucker, in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, made GAYOT.com’s 2013 Hot 40 Restaurants in the U.S. The day I dropped by in the middle of the week in low-season, the restaurant was packed.

It is 18 kilos of a 1,200-page cookbook containing 500 recipes and illustrated by 1,500 photos; 1,000 copies of this book are being sold at € 1,500 by a chef who started in the kitchen at 15, and has been cooking for 25 years. From peeling potatoes at his debut, Yannick Alléno worked his way up to fine dining gastronomy when he took the helm at Le Meurice restaurant in Paris.

I think when restaurateur/hotelier Michael Zislis created The Strand House Culinary Masters Series, he had a very good idea. Every time I have attended one of the events, the restaurant has been completely full. I didn’t see a single empty seat; instead I saw lots of people enjoying the cuisine of Josiah Citrin, Michael Cimarusti, Nancy Silverton, Alain Giraud, Douglas Keane or Tory McPhail to name just a few of the participating chefs. To top it off, diners can eat the fine food while watching the sun set over the Manhattan Beach pier and the Pacific.


During one of the dinners, where Trefethen wines were served, I finished the evening talking with chef Rick Tramonto who had flown in from Chicago. In the above video, you can watch as we flip through the pages of his autobiography together. Tramonto is a true success story; TRU restaurant under his direction was named one of GAYOT.com’s Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S. in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007. And Restaurant R’evolution in New Orleans, where he has partnered with chef John Folse, made GAYOT.com’s Top 10 New Restaurants in the U.S. list this year.

Hollis Wilder is my favorite kind of warrior: the chef is the three-time winner of Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars”. If you indulge in her creations like I have, “cupcake” will take on a whole different meaning. She ingeniously transformed a smoked salmon egg salad into a delicious savory cupcake which helped her win Season 1 in 2009. This year, she won Season 8 with her jalapeño popper. She even makes ratatouille cupcakes!

Thomas Keller is the only chef to have two restaurants with GAYOT.com’s highest rating of 19/20: The French Laundry and Per Se. Yesterday at Bouchon Beverly Hills, I had the pleasure to talk with him about his just-released dessert book, Bouchon Bakery. Sébastien Rouxel, the book’s co-author and the executive pastry chef of The Thomas Keller Restaurant Group, joined the conversation.


I had not seen the book until the three of us flipped through the 400 pages. If you haven’t had a chance to see Keller’s first recipe book for sweets either, watch the exclusive video above to discover it the same way they showed it to me. Coming from the masters directly, it is surely the best way to do so. The experience was quite fun, and, of course, a sweet moment to remember!

Besides the meal we shared at Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air restaurant, I also was lucky enough to have a private discussion with the gifted storyteller.


Allow me to share a few words about the lady from Switzerland who brought so much to the Valley and is now the Vice President of Cultural Affairs of Robert Mondavi Winery: generosity, joie de vivre, witty, artistic, colorful style and simplicity.

This weekend, I was going through my pile of cookbooks, and I am glad I did. I found The Bikini Chef Susan Irby‘s fourth cookbook, Substitute Yourself Skinny, which I use when I want to eat tasty but healthy foods at home. Lots of effort went into the creation of this 175-recipe book. The entire Irby family was involved: her mother helped her test each recipe, while her husband and daughter lost the use of the kitchen when photos were taken!
