Does the world need a Tabasco-flavored chocolate? No. Is it a better place for having it? We think so.
We honestly didn't believe the addition of Tabasco sauce to our favorite flavor was a good idea, but
Southern California-based The Chocolate Traveler has somehow made this mixed marriage work. In
cooperation with McIlhenny Company, the Louisiana makers of the famous hot sauce, they have infused
dark chocolate wedges with the spicy kick of Tabasco.
The result is understated. At first, the chocolate flavor merely seems amped; then, a slow burn begins to
cross the palate. The heat never reaches the point where one feels the need to douse it with water, but
the enjoyable burn is definitely evident in the smooth aftertaste. We've resisted the urge to down one
after another to see if a three-alarm fire will occur, but at only 30 calories per wedge, there's no reason
to hold back.
The Chocolate Traveler makes other kinds of wedges as well, including satisfying milk chocolate and
even sugar-free varieties. But none will start a conversation quicker than the Tabasco flavor. The wedges
come eight to a tin that's easy to store in a purse or pocket. You'll find them at Cost Plus and
online at www.thechocolatetraveler.com.
