French Musician Enrico Macias Tours the U.S.
Enrico Macias, one of the most popular and influential French recording artists of his generation, is touring the U.S. in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his musical career. He will be performing in Los Angeles (June 6th), Miami (June 8th) and NYC (June 9th). Originally from Algeria, he is internationally recognized for his North-African influenced music, which often tackles humanitarian themes.
After he left Algeria for France in the early 1960s, Macias quickly gained fame for his adaptations of ethnic Maalouf music. He has toured the U.S., Japan, Canada, Russia and Israel and is the most high-profile Algerian musician in France.
A vocal proponent of international peace and solidarity, Macias has received numerous prizes throughout his career. In 1980 he was awarded the “Singer of peace” title by UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim and in 1985 he received the Legion of Honor (officer in 2007). In 1997, he was named “Roving Ambassador for Peace and the Defence of Children” by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
