ETCH A SKETCH
Lucian Freud: The Painter's Etchings

Fog Curtain at Water exhibit

The Museum of Modern Art showcases one of its newest exhibitions, "Lucian Freud: The Painter's Etchings," on display until March. Though famous for his paintings, Lucian Freud, grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, also produced a number of copper etchings, ranging from rare early experiments in the 1940s to the complex compositions he created beginning in the 1980s. Freud was unique in his unconventional style of printmaking, standing up the copper plate on an easel much like a canvas. His etchings, much like his paintings, features mostly two types of portraits—categorized by him as "portrait heads" and "naked portraits." The cross-media installation includes dozens of these etchings, along with a selection of related paintings and drawings.
