At first glance, the little store looks like a '70s-style, mom-and-pop operation, but a closer look reveals it to be a neighborhood Cuban market. The entrance is filled with aromatic seasonal fruits, express from someone's tiny farm. There are fresh, ripe mangoes, mammoth papayas, finger bananas, mamey and coconuts. There are also ruby- red Roma tomatoes, chayote squash, yucca, and plantains, the quintessential Cuban table staple. Packaged and bottled Spanish items include multicolored moles, mojos, and salsas, plus dried exotic Latin American spices and chiles. Chorizo, homemade queso blanco, frozen tamales, freshly baked Cuban bread and bacalao are just some of the island standards that crowd the aisles. A fantastic array of South American wines under $10 per bottle also may help explain Alton Road's popularity.
