Gourmet retailer to the rich and the impractical, Epicure, a South Beach institution since 1943, is the mother of all markets. It's the Jewish mother (chicken-matzoh ball soup, chopped liver, and rugalach), the Italian mother (minestrone, lasagna, and fresh buffalo mozzarella) and the American mother (cream of mushroom soup, fried chicken, pot roast and mashed potatoes). The consistency, quality and breadth of the Epicure brand of prepared foods (hot and ready-to-eat, refrigerated and ready-to-heat, and frozen) are all unparalleled in these parts. Epicure is famous for hefty prices, particularly when it comes to seafood, meats and produce. (Dare we confess that we think the fare is worth it?) Equally renowned for its extensive selection of wines, beers, cheeses, olives, pâtés, fresh seafood and meats, exotic fruits and vegetables, the market also flaunts a diverse selection of house-baked breads and pastries. For a real treat, try the white peach tart or apricot coffeecake.
