"British cuisine" may seem an oxymoron to some, but the three British Food Centres in California (Campbell, San Carlos, and Solano Beach farther south) carry yummy imported foods. The owners, Bill Fredlund, a retired air force colonel, and his Yorkshire-born wife, Betty, ran an antique business, importing furniture from England. Friends were always asking them to bring back specialty foods from England, and the British Food Centres evolved from those requests. Popular items include Branston pickles, traditionally served on a ploughman's plate; real frozen kippers; and, of course, a large selection of teas. Some of the more exotic items are Batchelors mushy peas, haggis (a Scottish dish of sheep's innards and oatmeal, cooked like a sausage) and frozen cakes such as spotted dick.
