For Ethiopian food lovers, Merkato is a major food source. Here you can find the basis of all Ethiopian cuisine, the spongy tangy injera bread. For the adventurous cook, the ancient ground grain teff that makes injera can be purchased also. Coffee connoisseurs will appreciate the Ethiopian coffees from Sidamo and Harar. The basis for much of the fiery heat in the cuisine can be found here in the berbere, the thick red paste of ginger, cardamom, coriander, fenugreek, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and allspice ground with oil and water. The shelves also are stocked with lentils.
