The Xara Palace was built in the 17th century to house a noble family. Much later, it was commandeered as a mess hall for British officers during WWII. While we find these tidbits interesting, we prefer the building's present incarnation: a beautifully restored, family-run hotel. The 17 bedrooms and suites are decorated with period pieces and original Maltese artworks, and their views range from internal courtyards to the town's main piazza. A portion of The Xara Palace is integrated into the bastion walls of the fortified medieval city of Mdina, and de Mondion Restaurant, located atop these centuries-old bastions, offers an unforgettable dining experience.
