Ace Hotel Review: A few of the old hotels in downtown Portland are cheap and seedy. This one --- hooray! --- is affordable and charming. It resides in a 1912 building that was completely renovated in 2000. Fortunately, the building has retained its original charm. For example, the bathrooms feature original mosaic tile floors and claw-footed tubs. Staying here means an experience mixed with the highs and lows of historic hotel living: highs as in high ceilings and lows such as no in-room telephones. There are phones and Internet access on each floor, however, and the rooms are spacious with big closets and TVs. Rates include breakfast. Expect to find budget-conscious Europeans here, as well as clean-cut youngsters taking advantage of the option of inexpensive hostel-style rooms with shared baths. Powell's City of Books, one of Portland's most popular tourist attractions, is just down the street.
