The Ahwahnee Hotel Review

: This National Historic Landmark is set within one of the country's most glorious open spaces: Yosemite National Park. Built in 1927, the six-story stone-and-sugar pine beauty juts out from the bottom of a dramatic granite cliff. It is where Queen Elizabeth and President John F. Kennedy stayed when visiting Yosemite. The gorgeous, tasteful d├ęcor is an eclectic mix of styles, ranging from Native American to Art Deco. Guests can choose from 123 guest rooms, including a host of suites and private cottages. All accommodations include cable television and bathrobes. Of particular note: The El Dorado Suite, with its sunken living room, served as a chapel for military men during World War II. Elsewhere on property, the enormous dining room has a 34-foot ceiling with top-to-bottom stained glass windows and oversized wrought-iron chandeliers. Equally dramatic is the Solarium with its glass walls, jasper fountain and lush gardens. The hotel is a short walk to a host of trails that climb into the park from the Yosemite Valley. It also is served by the free shuttle buses that crisscross the park.
