Bacara Resort & Spa Hotel Review: A 2011 buyout was the best thing to happen at this lavish destination resort since it opened more than a decade earlier. Spa aficionados still flock to the white stucco sanctuary. Dining options are still as good as they get in Santa Barbara County. The signs curtly proclaiming “Bacara Guests Only,” however, have been taken down. More than a symbolic gesture, the move is part of a new spirit of inclusiveness at the 78-acre beachfront property in Goleta, ten minutes west of Santa Barbara. Affluent travelers mix with locals who have embraced recent changes and come to enjoy the offerings. The 311 well-appointed guest rooms and 49 specialty suites comprise a Mediterranean-style village lush with palm trees and flowering birds of paradise. Superior rooms such as Sea Haven and The Penthouse boast Viking appliances, open floor plans and expansive windows looking onto the shimmering Pacific below. Village View rooms surround the courtyard and, as such, are subject to noise from weddings and other events. A world-class wine cellar with more than 1,200 labels awaits. The adjacent Sandpiper Golf Club offers one of the state’s top courses, and downtown Santa Barbara and the wine country are both just a short drive away.
