Barnsley Gardens Resort Hotel Review

: Before the U.S. Civil War, Englishman Godfrey Barnsley, a wealthy Savannah cotton broker, built an Italianate retreat for his beloved Julia, who suffered ill health. She died before the house was finished, but Barnsley completed it and developed the gardens following the aesthetics of Andrew Jackson Downing. Today, the original house ruins serve as the locus of the resort. Purchasing the property in 1988, German Prince Hubertus Fugger stabilized the ruins and restored the gardens. The original Fugger-built cottages, where guest rooms feature front porches adorned with rocking chairs, are centered by a similarly styled chapel, making the setting perfect for weddings. These also are great for romantic getaways, while the newer cottages, with full kitchens, appeal more to groups, family reunions, wedding parties and business gatherings. In all, there are 36 cottages with 90 rooms and suites, all featuring satellite TV and data ports. Fireplaces, fine linens and ball-and-claw tubs are highlights of the stylish surroundings. Guests can dine on Continental fare at Rice House or on steak and seafood at Woodlands Grill, which overlooks the 72-hole golf course. The Bavarian Beer Garden serves imported German beers, pretzels and bratwurst cooked over an open fire pit. Activities include fly fishing and horseback riding at a nearby facility. There is also a gift shop. Insider tip: Beware of ill-marked speed zones while driving through Adairsville.
