The Broadmoor Hotel Review: This 3,000-acre resort at the foot of the Rocky Mountains started life as a casino in 1891. When it was transformed into a grand hotel, it was intended to be one of the finest in the country. European and Oriental influences played heavily into its design, and an Old World feel remains. The property is anchored by Cheyenne Lake and has three golf courses: the original Broadmoor Nine (which later added another nine) by Donald Ross, a second course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and a third by Ed Seay and Arnold Palmer. The 700 guestrooms are located in the historic Main Building and the West Tower; the latter have balconies overlooking the golf course, many with great mountain and lake views. There is an 11,000-square-foot infinity edge swimming pool at the north end of the lake, an outdoor lap pool with mountain views and an indoor pool set beneath a stained glass skylight. Top-notch resort facilities include The Spa at the Broadmoor and The Broadmoor Tennis Complex, with seven plexi-cushion courts including one stadium court and two courts covered by an illuminated heated bubble during the winter. Additional amenities include bicycle rentals, stables, paddleboats and walking trails. Located on the top floor of The Broadmoor South Tower is highly celebrated restaurant The Penrose Room, offering an extraordinary international wine list, live entertainment and dancing - this fancy establishment requires gentlemen to wear jackets.
