Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa Review: Those looking for a relaxing getaway that includes sun and fun will enjoy the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa. Located right on Mission Bay, the resort boasts exquisite grounds teeming with exotic plants and flowers, tropical birds, frogs and koi goldfish. At times one feels transported to Hawaii, but rest assured Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and downtown's Gaslamp District are a few short miles away. If renting a car is too much of a hassle, there is plenty to do on property, including roller blading, biking, boogie boarding, paddle boating, kayaking and riding jet skis. The resort also has sand volleyball courts, a fitness center, an outdoor heated pool and Jacuzzi. Despite the luxurious grounds, the 313 guest rooms and suites could use some updating. Studio rooms are decorated in pleasing neutral tones but most other rooms have outdated floral bedspreads and draperies. Tower rooms have ocean views, while bay front rooms look over the water, boats, beach and bike path. Executive chef Steven Riemer oversees the indoor/outdoor restaurant Oceana Coastal Kitchen, which offers California comfort cuisine. A special treat is the nightly complimentary Bahia Belle cruise upon a Mississippi-style sternwheeler complete with dancing, DJs, cocktails and stellar views from the upper deck.
