The Chatwal, a Luxury Collection Hotel Review: Sant Chatwal, father of celebrity hotelier Vikram Chatwal, pulled off an amazing feat when he opened The Chatwal New York: he delivered a property that feels equal parts downtown and theater-goer friendly while also serving up a fine blend of old NYC layered with contemporary comforts. Along with the project's lead architect, Thierry Despont, Chatwal should also be commended for doing what so many others can't seem to do in modern-day New York: he left a grande dame of NYC architecture in better (yet hipper) shape than he found her (no ugly glass replacement tower necessary). Once home to the Lambs Club, America’s first professional theater club, the 1905 building was designed by acclaimed architect Stanford White. Under the sole design direction of Despont, the hotel features Art Deco modernism replete with meticulous detailing. Even the old name has been preserved in the Geoffrey Zakarian-helmed The Lambs Club restaurant. The Chatwal has thirteen room styles, ranging from spacious guest rooms to the 4,500-square-foot Barrymore Suite, with four bedrooms and a 1,000-square-foot roof deck. Some of the amenities standard to the rooms include complimentary Internet access, laptop safes, 42-inch HD flat-screen TVs with multi-lingual capability, Blueray DVD players, on-demand video and stereo systems with iPod docks. The small but elegant Red Door Spa offers three treatment rooms, as well as an infinity saltwater lounge, cold plunge pool and lap pool.
