Clift Hotel Review: Once the most traditional of San Francisco's grand hotels, this historic building was remodeled in 2001 by avant-garde designers Philippe Starck and Ian Schraeger. Instead of replacing the joint's formal character, the duo sought to revitalize its Victorian traditions while retaining its rich spirit. The result is a breathtaking blend of 21st-century technology and sophistication with charm that captures San Francisco's vibrant contradictions. Classic focal points include the bar, made from a solid piece of 2,000-year-old redwood; projections of digital art; and an oversized Louis XV chair. The Living Room, a cozy nook just off the lobby, is a popular hangout. All 373 guest rooms are generously upholstered in velvets, leathers and silks, and feature amenities such as flat screen televisions, Malin + Goetz bath products and spacious work areas. Though there's no spa, guests can book treatments in their rooms.
