Colony Palms Hotel Review: This 56-room, Spanish Revival-style boutique property was built in 1936 just as Hollywood celebrities began migrating to Palm Springs, the new getaway "playground to the stars." Adjacent to the famed Movie Colony district, it was constructed by Purple Gang mobster Al Wertheimer. As the Colonial House, its illicit activities included gambling and Prohibition-era drinking. In the 1940s it was transformed into a haven for young Hollywood as the Howard Manor; then, in 2007, it was re-made once again. Designer rooms by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard feature Turkish Suzani headboards, leather club chairs, super-comfy beds, Italian bed linens and well-stocked mini-bars. Some rooms also have fireplaces and antique claw-foot bathtubs, and casitas feature patios with two-person hot tubs and outdoor lounge beds. Diversions include a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, and the contemporary Mediterranean cuisine of the hotel’s Purple Palm Restaurant & Bar, with indoor and outdoor dining.
