El Monte Sagrado Living Resort & Spa Hotel Review: El Monte Sagrado stands in a class all by itself. The leafy compound not only has eco-consciousness at its core but it also sets the standard for luxury in Taos. In addition to the 36 suites and casitas and 2007-built Taos Mountain rooms, there’s a superb spa, spring-like pool, hot tub, art filled restaurant and bar, art gallery/gift shop and clubby library lounge. In October 2007, a ballroom-sized meeting room and new entryway were added to the property as well as the Taos Mountain wing of 48 rooms. Décor here is very textural: pebbly topped fireplaces and deep soaking tubs, rich turquoise and dark brown hues and cushy bed covers. Unique to the resort are the hand crafted casitas and global suites decorated with exotic imported fabrics, antiques and decorative pieces from Tibet, China, Japan, India and other far-flung places, as well as furnishings and artwork from Native American cultures. Many of these remarkable rooms have private outdoor hot tubs, kiva-style fireplaces and secluded patios or balconies overlooking the graceful cottonwood trees and burbling streams that dot the property. The resort's Living Spa offers a wide range of invigorating skin and body treatments and massages, such as a desert purifying ritual. Relax in the indoor steam room or outside in the co-ed sauna. Among the resort’s earth friendly attributes is a water reclamation system that recycles 4,000 gallons of water each day. De La Tierra offers contemporary Southwestern fare; the hotel's bar is popular with locals and can be counted on for potent cocktails and friendly service in an eye-catching setting.
