Figueroa Hotel Review: If the ghost of author Paul Bowles were exiled to Los Angeles, it would haunt this Moroccan-spiced hotel. Offering a nice alternative to downtown’s many big-and-sleek properties catering to corporate travelers, Hotel Figueroa takes guests on a journey to North Africa by way of a Spanish-style building that began life in the 1920s as a YWCA. Also nice is the price. This is one of the city’s better values, although you won’t find all of the expected high-tech amenities of an upscale brand hotel. But you will find locals mingling in the atmospheric bar and pool area. It's a favorite hangout for Angelenos in the know. Since room quality can vary, we recommend the suites, whose moods suit their names (Marrakech, Medina and so on). Keep in mind that the location across from the Staples Center and L.A. Live can mean little peace and quiet during high-profile events.
