First Colony Inn Hotel Review: In 1988 the Lawrence family saved this 1930s Shingle-style inn from being swallowed up by the Atlantic Ocean---they had it cut into three pieces and reconstructed three miles to the south. Along with lovingly restoring this Outer Banks property to its former beauty, the family added numerous modern conveniences. The reward for such labors? A listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Each of the 26 suites is adorned with elegant English antiques and has a tiled bath with heated towel bar and English toiletries. TVs, phones and refrigerators are standard; some also have wet bars, kitchenettes, Jacuzzi whirlpool tubs, sitting rooms and private screened porches. Lounging areas range from a verandah and gazebo to a private pool. Specials include a Honeymoon Package---breakfast is served on a silver tray with Champagne, chocolates and six long-stemmed roses. This area is known for bird-watching opportunities in the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, surf fishing and hiking.
