The Heywood Hotel Review: This mid-century-style boutique hotel embodies the intangible elements that define Austin: creative, easygoing and cool. Located smack dab in the middle of trendy East Austin, the modern seven-room bungalow is surrounded by local restaurants, lounges and shops. The Heywood is an easy walk to downtown, Sixth Street, the Convention Center and Lady Bird Lake, and the hotel offers bikes for guest use. The setting is a groovy little oasis of style, with a knock-out design. From the street it looks like a house, blending in with neighboring 1920s-era residences. The back is a modern courtyard hotel, inspired by Palm Springs lodgings and the interior courtyards of homes and hotels in Spain. The owners took a mixed-period approach with furnishings and décor, pairing upcycled classic wingbacks and Danish armchairs with minimalist, handmade furnishings and modern artwork. The result is cozy, colorful and a little funky. Items from local artists and crafts people are utilized throughout the hotel and on display. Each of the seven rooms offers its own personality and custom experience, and the personal service from the husband-and-wife owners is outstanding.
