Hotel del Coronado Hotel Review: What symbolizes San Diego more than the historic Hotel del Coronado? Quite simply, nothing. Famous as the site of Marilyn Monroe's debut in "Some Like It Hot," as well as the place Wallis Simpson allegedly met the future Duke of Windsor, the James Reid-designed seaside charmer sits directly on the white sands of Coronado Island. This historic hotel with its Queen Anne architecture and famous red turrets may be 125 years old, but she’s as gorgeous as ever. All guest rooms were recently renovated with neutral tones and cottage-style flair, and there are two kid’s suites with bunk beds and a charming underwater décor theme. The resort includes several pools, boutique shopping, a spa and salon, a fitness center and a variety of oceanfront dining venues. The only reason to leave the property is to stroll Coronado’s quaint village streets. Beach lovers should request rooms in one the ocean towers or California cabanas, while nostalgic guests will prefer accommodations in the Victorian building. While modern in its luxury and comfort quotient, the celebrated hotel also invites guests to walk back in time as echoes of the past fill the hallways. Famous guests include Charles Lindbergh, Charlie Chaplin and eleven U.S. presidents. Sunday brunch in the stunning Crown Room is a feast for the senses with carving stations, international dishes, garden fresh salads, omelet stations, charcuterie, a seafood buffet and possibly the best dessert spread in the country.
