Hotel Monaco Portland Hotel Review: This boutique-style hotel, formerly known as the 5th Avenue Suites, sits in an historic setting right in the middle of downtown. The refurbished building maintains its early twentieth century charm with well-preserved high ceilings and large windows. The fireplace in the antique-filled lobby, or living room, offers a pleasant respite from Portland’s gloomy gray evenings. At the nightly complimentary wine reception, the staff provides paints and canvas so you can express your creativity, then enter your masterpiece in the weekly art contest. The service here is capable, attentive and refined. Spacious rooms are nicely appointed with lots of special treats: Egyptian cotton robes, rich linens, umbrellas, Starbucks coffee and Aveda bath loot. Rooms in the 550-square-foot suites are divided by sliding French doors. This ten-story building is located right on Portland’s bustling bus mall, so you’d do well to ask for a room high up above the madding crowd.
