Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa Hotel Review: This forty-acre combination hotel and theme park was described as Disneyland, Maui-style, when it opened back in 1980. Compared to the excesses of the late '80s, though, it now seems downright tasteful. It underwent a multi-million dollar renovation in the 1990s and has since opened the 9,000-square-foot Spa Moana, Hawaii's first oceanfront spa and the first full-service luxury spa on Kaanapali Beach. The rooms here are spread out over three towers that overlook a white sand beach. Despite the proximity to the surf, most guests seem to prefer the giant meandering pool with a convenient cocktail bar and 150-foot water slide, or the new 3,000-square-foot Keiki Lagoon for kids. The grounds are lush, with swinging rope bridges, cascading waterfalls, bubbling streams and a wide assortment of birds tended by a wildlife staff. A rooftop astronomy program is offered, allowing guests to view the stars through a deep-space telescope. The $2-million collection of Asian and Pacific art scattered about the property is well worth investigating. Shoppers will be in heaven --- there is a small mall with over a dozen shops on the lobby level. A terrific selection of restaurants and an energetic Drums of the Pacific luau complete the experience.
