La Fonda on the Plaza Hotel Review: There's been a hotel at the corner of the Old Santa Fe Trail and San Francisco Street, overlooking the historic Plaza, for many generations. The current property, La Fonda, dates to 1922 but looks even older, with its stately Pueblo Revival architecture and snazzy tiled lobby decked with fine antiques and art. The 167 rooms continue the theme with handcrafted wooden furniture, handpainted headboards and chests, beamed ceilings and wrought-iron lamps. Wooden beams run across the ceilings, providing a rustic flare. One of the most interesting features at Santa Fe's only hotel directly overlooking the Plaza is the rooftop bar, where you can enjoy a margarita while taking in views of the city's colorful skyline and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the distance. There's also a small exercise room up here and a hot tub, as well as fourteen of the property's most upscale suites. You can also sip cocktails (late spring through early fall) in the fifth-floor Bell Tower Bar, which affords great views of town. On the ground floor, feast on inspired contemporary Southwestern fare in La Plazuela Restaurant, which is known for its char-grilled filet mignon with ancho-chile and morel mushroom sauce. As of May 2007, all food served at La Plazuela, the hotel's La Fiesta Lounge, room service and the hotel’s banquets will be absolutely free of all artificial trans-fats.
